Hera Leslie

Barn Name: Hera

Reference: Hera, Queen of Olympus

Hera is our 17-year-old, 10.3-hand golden bay miniature mare, and while she may be small in stature, she carries herself with the quiet dignity of a queen. Her journey to our herd is one of transformation, trust, and the remarkable things that can happen when a frightened soul is given the time and space to feel safe.

When Elizabeth first visited Colby’s Crew Rescue with her daughter and Kayla, they noticed Dash, another little mini who captured their attention from the back of a field. After hearing his story, they couldn't help but ask about the other horses who were considered difficult cases. That was when they met Hera.

At the time, Hera was incredibly shy and deeply uncertain of people. She did everything she could to avoid being touched and made it very clear that she was not comfortable with human interaction. She kept her distance, guarded herself carefully, and had little reason to believe that allowing someone into her space would lead to anything good.

We brought Hera home and gave her something she needed more than anything: time. With a year of stability, safety, patient desensitization, and respectful training, Hera slowly began to discover that she didn't always have to be afraid. Trust was built quietly, one small interaction at a time, until the mare who once avoided touch began to seek it out.

Today, Hera is a pretty normal horse who comes eagerly forward to be haltered at feeding time, and has begun initiating touch. The transformation is remarkable—not because she has forgotten her past, but because she has learned that her past does not have to determine her future.

Hera has also found a family within our herd. She has formed a particularly sweet friendship with Dash and Blue and she rarely wanted to be far from our beloved old lady, Lady Gaga, another special Colby’s Crew rescue. Hera has a gift for making friends, and her friendship with Olive has quickly become one of her favorites. The two mares absolutely adore one another and can rarely resist spending time together.

One of our wonderful trainers, Katy Whipple, once described Hera's transformation in a way that perfectly captures who she has become: “Hera is now a horse with baggage, not just baggage in the form of a horse.”

There is so much truth in those words. Hera still carries the experiences that shaped her, but they are no longer all that she is. Beneath them is a thoughtful, affectionate, loyal mare with a tremendous capacity for connection. She has learned to trust, to seek companionship, and to let people into her world.

In Greek mythology, Hera was the Queen of Olympus, known for her strength, dignity, loyalty, and fierce devotion to those she loved. Our Hera embodies those qualities in her own quiet way. She is deeply loyal to her people and her herd, protective of the friendships she has formed, and carries herself with a confidence that could easily make you forget just how scared she once was. Her crown may be invisible, but there is no mistaking the queen when she walks among her herd.

Hera's story is a beautiful reminder that healing does not happen all at once. Sometimes it happens slowly, quietly, and almost imperceptibly until one day you realize that the frightened horse standing before you has become someone entirely new.

She did not need to become fearless to become confident. She simply needed to learn that she was safe.

Now, surrounded by people and horses she loves, Hera is finally able to be exactly who she was always meant to be.

Our little Queen of Olympus, ruling her kingdom with grace, loyalty, and a heart that has finally learned it is safe to love.
