Not You, Guillermo

Barn Name: Gizmo or Giz

Reference: What We Do In The Shadows

Hello. My name is Gizmo. Well, technically my name is De’s Castle, but everyone here calls me Gizmo or Giz, which I think is much more friendly. I am a dark bay Thoroughbred gelding, born March 17, 2020, in West Virginia. I was bred by Taylor Mountain Farm and I had a racing career at Charles Town, where I made 36 starts. Then, in February 2025, I came to Wrenacyn to begin my new life.

It has been an adjustment.

I am a very good horse. I would like to make that clear immediately. I am also still quite green, which means I am learning many new things. Sometimes I see something and my eyes become extremely large and I look very alarmed. Everyone seems to think I am about to have a terrible reaction.

I am not.

My eyes are simply very enthusiastic.

In fact, I have discovered that my eyes and my brain are not always communicating. My eyes will say, “GUILLERMO! WE ARE IN DANGER!” and my brain will say, “Hmm. Probably fine.” Usually, my brain is correct.

My restart has had some twists and turns. I have had a few injuries, which has meant that sometimes my job has been to stand around and recover, which I am actually very good at. But I am on the mend, and I am beginning to understand what this whole riding-horse business is about.

I am quite good at it, actually.

I have been making incredible progress as a dressage prospect. I am learning how to carry myself, how to listen to my rider, and how to do all the elegant horse things. I have even started jumping small crossrails. The crossrails are sometimes very surprising, but I jump them anyway because I am brave and also because apparently everyone is watching me.

My social life at Wrenacyn is also very important.

I have a girlfriend.

She is very helpful because not only is her name The Guide but she is my guide and she understands things. If I am unsure about something, I can look at her and she is like, “Gizmo, it is literally nothing.” Then I realize she is correct. This is why I love her.

My other friends are all the big bays on the farm. This is very important because the big bays are extremely prestigious horses and I have successfully integrated myself into their social circle. I am basically one of them now. I am not sure they know this, but I have decided it is true.

Sometimes I stand with the big bays and I look very important. Then someone walks by carrying a bucket and I become deeply concerned but I recover quickly.

Everyone keeps saying I am going to be amazing, and I think they are probably right. I have a lot to learn, but I am kind, willing, and trying very hard. I am figuring out this new career one day at a time, and despite the occasional perceived eye-related potential emergency, I am becoming quite the little gentleman.

So yes. I am Gizmo.

I used to be a racehorse. Now I am becoming a dressage horse.

I have a girlfriend and I have important friends.

I jump things and I am very brave.

Even when my eyes say otherwise.
